Yacht Racing

Our yacht “Paddiywack” will be entered in a variety of races this year including the Round the Island Race and Cowes week. Much of our racing programme is for young people aged 13 – 19 (14 years and upwards for cross-channel racing), although, some of the races are open to adults too. Complete novices can take part in most of our races (some previous sailing experience will be useful but not essential), all participants in cross channel races do need some sailing experience. There will be two experienced adults on board to train the crew and then guide them through exciting races competing on equal terms with adult crews from all over the country. Each racing experience will be preceded by a day or 2 of training and all racing crew will receive a free crew shirt.

IYWAC - Yachting

Last year we had a great year with our new Seaquest 32 “Paddiywack”. She is a yacht with a great racing pedigree and is also comfortable for fast cruising. With a full suit of race sails from Quantum, she is well equipped for racing activities and race charter. The yacht is commercially coded (Category 2) with a full cruising inventory. There are eight berths in four cabins. Oilskins and wellies are provided (at no extra charge!) The Solent and its approaches offer superb cruising grounds for all levels of sailor. Anchorages and harbours are many and varied, with each stop offering its own challenges. Our courses make full use of this area, sailing as far as Weymouth and Poole in the West, Chichester in the East, and more experienced crews may sail to France!

Yacht Cruising / RYA Courses

There are cruising courses throughout the summer, some for young people only and others for adults. Teaching ratios for adult courses will be 4:1 and for young people 5:1 (plus another experienced adult on board). All course fees include use of oilskins, food, moorings and fuel. The RYA National Cruising Scheme has four practical courses: Start Yachting, Competent Crew, Dayskipper (for age 16+) and Coastal Skipper (for age 17+). All of the practical courses are five days (with the exception of Start Yachting which is two days). During the week you will visit a different port each night, cover over 100 sea miles and experience some night sailing. RYA/MCA certificates of competence can also be gained, we can support candidates trying for the RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper certificate and the RYA/ MCA Yachtmaster Offshore certificate.
