RYA Navigation  & Theory Courses (Shorebased)

The RYA’s navigation and seamanship theory courses are designed to help you unravel the mysteries of navigation, pilotage, passage planning and meteorology. They are great as stand alone courses, but also complement RYA practical training courses.
Basic Navigation and Safety Course
This course gives a basic introduction to navigation and safety for anyone new to boating: sailors, powerboaters, sea anglers, divers and boatmasters. Also useful for experienced dinghy and keelboat sailors and inshore racers.
Day Skipper Shorebased Course
The Dayskipper course is an introduction to navigation and meteorology as well as some of the theoretical aspects of seamanship. This course is ideal for the sailor contemplating the Dayskipper practical course as well as being a good grounding in basic inshore navigation skills. The Course takes place on a Wednesday evening between 7 and 9pm. Pre-Course Experience: Some practical experience.
Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore Shorebased Course
Offshore and coastal navigation, pilotage, meteorology and IRPCS are all covered on the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster course. Not a course for the novice navigator, all the skills required for an offshore passage are dealt with in depth. The Course takes place on a Thursday evening between 7 and 9pm. Pre-Course Experience: Navigation to Dayskipper shorebased standard.
RYA One Day First Aid Course
In a medical emergency a little first aid knowledge and immediate action can save lives, especially in remote locations. This one-day course is designed to provide a working knowledge of first aid for people using small craft and to support skippers. It fulfils the requirements for professional skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of safe haven. The course is recommended by the MCA and HSE, and satisfies the requirements of some categories of commercial work afloat, including Boatmasters.
Marine Radio Short Range Certificate Course
This radio operator qualification authorises the holder to operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling on board any British vessel which is voluntarily fitted with radio equipment. Course includes use of marine radios including GMDSS. Routine, distress, urgency and safety procedures. One day course includes examination.
