Dinghy Course Details

Start Sailing Course Stages 1&2 - Youth

This is the course for novices. Starting in sheltered waters we concentrate on boat handling skills, gradually building competence and confidence. By the end of the week all students will be able to helm a dinghy in light conditions and be safety conscious.

Stage Three Course - Youth

For sailors who have already attained stage 2 or who have done at least one weeks sailing. This course will aim to improve helming skills in our single-handed dinghies.

Stage Four Course - Youth

Sailing in a variety of boats this course is designed to improve all sailing skills and make sailors more independant. Having gained the skills needed to acquire this level you will then be ready to move on to the advanced sailing modules. Assumed pre-course experience: Stage 3.

Sail Fast Course - Youth

This course combines two of the advanced sailing modules. Start Racing and Sailing with Spinnakers. Race training takes place in our single-handed dinghies and the spinnaker training will take place in double-handers with trapeze and spinnaker. Assumed pre course experience: Stage Four.

Expedition Sailing - Youth

This course combines two of the advanced sailing modules. Seamanship skills and Daysailing. This course teaches the skills necessary to cruise in dinghies. An overnight camp is included in this course (all food and equipment is provided). Assumed pre course experience: Stage Four.

Start Sailing Weekend - Adult/Youth

Start sailing weekends are ideal for beginners and novices as well as anyone wishing to brush up their skills. The course will cover the syllabus for adult levels 1 & 2 and young sailors stages 1-4, depending on your ability.

Adult Dinghy Course - Adult

This season we are offering two 6-session evening courses. Novices can expect to achieve the RYA Level One certificate after one course and can try for the RYA Level Two certificate on the second course. If you can already sail use this opportunity to improve your skills, with our well-equipped Wayfarers and good staff ratios. An ideal way to learn how to sail and wind down after a Monday at work.

IYWAC - Dinghy Sailing

The combination of highly experienced instructors, safe but responsive dinghies and a variety of sailing waters  means that we are ideally equipped to offer excellent courses and activities for all levels of experience. The Centre has a fleet of over twenty sailing dinghies (more than half of the fleet are less than five years old). This fleet includes Wayfarers, 420s, RS Fevas, Laser Picos and Escape Mangos. Check our website for a full list of equipment available. As well as organising RYA Courses, we also run a number of popular activities including expeditions, weekend fun sessions and our new Saturday Sailing Club. RYA Young Sailors Scheme All of our youth sailing courses are based upon the syllabi contained in the

RYA Young Sailors Scheme.
This scheme gives a clear progression of training for all young people. There are four start sailing stages followed by short advanced modules called; "Sailing With Spinnakers", "Start Racing", "Daysailing", "Seamanship Skills", and "Performance Sailing".

 

 

Details of Dinghies

IYWAC has a fleet of  21 Sailing Dinghies

5 Wayfarers – Large stable dinghy capable of carrying 3 or 4 students and an instructor. Can be rigged with spinnakers for faster cruising and expedition sailing.

6 Escape Mangos – Small single-hander, very simple to rig and sail. You will be controlling your own boat in no time.

2 Laser Picos – A robust single-hander which can also be fitted with a jib to be sailed two up. A popular choice on beginner/improver courses.

3 RS Fevas – A sporty singlehander which can be fitted with jib and spinnaker to be sailed with two. Great for improving sailing and learning about racing.

2 Laser Vagos – High performance double-hander with spinnaker and trapeze. New to the Centre in 2007, these boats will be popular on advanced courses.

1 Access Dinghy – Designed for students with physical disability, particularly impairment of the lower limbs.
